Contributions are thinning out, this is mostly letters. I do seem to remember telling the contributor of a couple of really good articles, "I'll hold 'em in reserve for a while" -- I can't seem to *ahem* find same, if this was you, please let me know. Hmmmm... Easter: that's when Dick and Dorothea went off to visit their Mother's old schoolmistress while their parents were up at a dig on the Roman Wall. I recently got hold of another excellent British Ordnance Survey map, "Norwich (North) and Wroxham", it shows the Bure from Wroxham to Thurne Mouth nicely, showing the minutest details like the Waterworks, and the Vicarage [but it doesn't mention the black sheep!]. I recommend these 1:25000 scale maps. I think an expert could spot every CC/BS location, since all dykes and ditches are shown. You won't find the Wilderness though: Ransome himself says it no longer exists, in the intro to the chapter when the D&Gs move there. We welcome J, Mike, Simon and others[?] to Virtual Tars membership. Do we call you "J" J? Hope you all had/are having a nice holiday. Peter Dowden Signaller -------------------------------- FROM DOUG FAUNT From: faunt@netcom.com (Doug Faunt N6TQS 510-655-8604) Clearly, to me, the thrilling fishing scene is catching the pike in Big Six. "Poor lads, poor lads.... So young and nothing left to live for." You told me you'd tell the story of Great Aunt Maria in this issue. *blush* SABRINA CLASS NO 28 HAS BEEN BOUGHT, WILL ADOPT TARRY NAME NEXT FRIDAY AT LAUNCHING CEREMONY, MEXT S2M WILL HAVE THE DETAILS, AND THE HAPPY ENDING TO THE ADVENTURES OF GREAT AUNT MARIA. LETTER FROM ALAN HAKIM From: alan_hakim@uk.ibm.com Ref Brad's note in S2M, I happen to be reading Jeremy Swift's book this week so I skipped forward to find the 'thrilling' passage. It is 'The World's Whopper' from The Big Six, so I suppose that fits his descrip- tion as 'the Cachalot man episode'. Though I always thought the point was that the Cachalot man wasn't there when it all happened. LETTER FROM CHRISTOPHER SHARP If you don't mind I'd rather that everyone who isn't on CompuServe starts emailing me through Demon (address to follow), could you put that in S2M please? You can now get me at: ***** christopher@resharp.demon.co.uk ***** or Compuserve User ID: R E Sharp 100272 , 3646 (100272.3646@compuserve.com) CHRISTOPHER WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BE EMAILED BY VIRTUAL TARS IN THE MIDLAND REGION QUERY: AR ON TELLY? Hi! I was an avid fan of Arthur Ransome's books as a child, and am now introducing them to my 7 year old son. We recently read S&A together as his bedtime book, and he was entranced. I was delighted, therefore, to stumble across the Arthur page on www, though I am not a member of TARS. I have a question. I recall watching a serialised version of S&A on TV as a child. It must have been around 1961-1964. I can't recall if it was BBC or ITV (probably BBC). Does anyone else remember it? I wonder if they (BBC or ITV) still have it in their archives. It would bring back some memories to see it again. Wouldn't it be wonderful if new films could be made of these stories? The thing that appealed to me was that they were totally believable, as opposed to most other fiction that children are fed on these days. Best regards, Steve South. steves@hprb175.uksr.hp.com QUERY: MONSIEUR RANSOME IN FRENCH? can anyone help? Dear peter@physics.otago.ac.nz, Strolling in the net, I ran into Arthur Ransome's page, and it struck me because I have just offered my son ``Swallows and Amazons''. That is to say, an old French translation I myself had been offered more than thirty years ago. It seems that it has not been reprinted since 1945 (I asked a number of children's booksellers and librarians, but no one had even heard about Arthur Ransome). My son does not speak English, but he would like to read other ``Swallows and Amazons'' books, and ``Swallowdale'' is the only one I have. If you have any ideas about (available) French translations of Arthur Ransome's books, could you please let me know ?
